Every single person has fought the Battle of Better-than. Some more than others, some continuously, some only once in a while. But it’s a battle we all are drafted to fight, and sadly, the Battle has claimed a more than a few lives. It’s a Battle of our Minds; a negative, evil-driven militia we are never too old to be a part of.
It’s the battle of comparison. A battle that begins, and ends, in our minds. “I’m not as (fill in the blank) as he/she is.” Whether it’s about parenting, appearance, wealth, physical ability, intelligence…we are forever in the battle of “they are better than I am.”
Why? Why do we endlessly feel unworthy, lacking, insufficient, just plain old NOT GOOD ENOUGH? Why do we fail to see the value WE as individuals have?
Really, it started waaay back in the beginning of time, when Satan told Eve she could be ‘smarter’ if she just ate the forbidden fruit. Convincing her, that SHE, in her beautiful, God-designed creation, was not quite good enough. So …she believed the LIE.
It IS a lie. It’s negative talk. It’s NOT good, positive, or fruitful to be bashing ourselves in comparison. And..it comes DIRECTLY from the Master of Destruction, King of Conflict, Satan himself. He feeds us those lies, those negative destructive thoughts, because his desire is to make us miserable, and destroy us. The Bible makes this very clear, warning us in 1 Peter 5:8 to “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
The “Battle of Better-than” is a fight creatively designed by Satan to stir the pot, keep us unsatisfied and always longing for ‘more.’ Giving us thoughts like “If my hair were straighter, if I had smaller feet, if I had a better sense of humor, if I could speak eloquently, if I was better at sports….THEN I’d have value. If ONLY I was NOT me, I’d be fabulous! ”
He, Satan, wants to steal our JOY, win over our minds, and rob our identity; Our sense of who we arebecause of WHO created us.
God in HIS wisdom, according to HIS purpose for each of us, created each one of us in HIS (God’s) image! We are each given our own talents, gifts, and abilities that are unique to US ONLY. Individually. Psalm 139:14 says “I will praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
That last part; “Your works are wonderful, I know that full well” is the part we really don’t know. We have forgotten, or not been told in some cases, WHO created us. That fact alone that a perfect God created us the way HE designed us is reason for, and ALL we need, to NOT engage in the Battle of Better-than. We are wonderfully made JUST THE WAY WE ARE.
We are all going to have our bad days. We are going to fail at….our jobs, parenting, as an athlete, …we are going to be ‘less than ideal’ at times. Once again, that incident in the Garden of Eden has caused us to have this ‘sin nature’ and so..we are going to mess up. Even the person you are comparing yourself to, is going to be not as ‘perfect’ as YOU make them out to be. A bad day doesn’t make you ‘less-than.’ It makes you human.
The Good news is, God knows that. He sent His son to save us. Our identity lies with HIM, not with society and what human standards give as expectations for our lives, personalities, appearances, etc. We are not called to engage in Satans Battle of Better-than. We are called to be exactly what we are; Children of a Holy God.
We don’t have to fight the Battle of Better-than and believe the lies. We already ARE better, when we live our lives according to His plan, for His purpose using all the wonderful gifts and abilities we’ve been given. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of this very desire of Gods, ” For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Hope. Not Harm.
Negativity is harmful. Not of God. Battle of the Better-than is harmful, and as is characterized by ‘battle’, destructive.
The next time you have the urge to engage in the “Battle of Better-than” I challenge you to ask yourself this question; “Where is this coming from?”
Remember the verse I just gave you from Jeremiah, and think about this verse from Philippians 4:8, ” Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Think about it. Be encouraged today, that YOU are more than a conqueror, and have no business being in the Battle of Better-than. You are “fearfully and wonderfully made.”
